Other areas you might want to consider: northern Michigan - I've heard it's beautiful. The northwest coast above Petoskey I heard is nice.
Duluth, Minnesota. I do business with some guys in Minneapolis, and one of them is from Ely, near the boundary waters. I've heard some nice things about Duluth and Ely, believe it or not.
Madison, Wisconsin. Everyone I've talked to who knows Madison says it's cool. It's on my agenda for a road trip. Probably decent job opportunities.
I'm afraid that if you move to northern Maine, you might be stuck in a food desert.
